SUMMER DAY 20, Thur June 18

Oops....I just realized that I never posted this week's verse earlier this week. This one is what I chose for my not-always-kind-mouthed-children this week. They don't speak in foul language or anything like that, but they sure know how to snip at each other & talk with attitudes!! Holy Spirit come....nip that in the bud!!

Just one quick picture for today:

Yes, that's Savannah...in the dress up clothes from my classroom. So cute! She is such a great helper in my classroom during the summer!

SUMMER DAY 19, Wed June 17

What a day....

At 7:45 this morning, I was rushing to get Samuel out the door to his basketball camp. Like I mentioned yesterday, I knew I'd have to walk him to the camp this morning. Our neighborhood is only 4 streets wide & the school where his camp is held is right next door to our neighborhood, so it's not a big deal to walk him over there. We left the house a couple minutes later than I'd hoped, but I still felt like there was plenty of time to get there. Now, here's where it gets tricky.

On the street that is closest to the school, there is an open area to walk through between our neighborhood & the school property. During the school year, teens walk to school through this route EVERY DAY. Larry has taken the kids for bike rides around the school property & has taken this route each time. However, when we reached the cut-through area this morning there was a chain link gate across it with a big "private property" sign on it! yikes! Realizing that we wouldn't be able to cut through that way like I had planned, I kinda panicked. We could walk all the way out to the highway & down the school's driveway but it would take more time than we had if I wanted to get him to the camp on time! By that time it was 7:55 & the camp was due to start in 5 minutes. Thankfully, my sweet girlfriend Kelly (who is a teacher at my school) lives in our neighborhood. I called her & she came to the rescue! THANK YOU KELLY! She picked us up, drove us over to the school & brought us back home in less time than it would've taken us to walk over there & back. I'm so glad she was willing!!

Not long after we got home, my mom arrived with a bag of peaches for us (from their garden). I told her of our dilemma. She called me a few minutes later from her hair dresser's shop (in my neighborhood). The lady who was cutting her hair told her of a way through the fence that I had not seen. She drove over & looked at it when she left the haircut place & sure enough....the other cut-through place was there. And it had been there when we called Kelly to rescue us this morning, we just didn't see it! Argh! I was grateful that it was there, but embarassed that I'd totally missed it the first time & had to bother a friend to come get me when I could've gotten through after all! Oh well........

During the time that Samuel was at camp, I checked my email & played a DVD interactive Hannah Montana game with the girls. All too quickly 10:30 arrived & it was time to head back over to the school to pick up Samuel. I got there with about 10 minutes to spare so I got to watch him play in a shirts vs skins game. Can you guess which team my silly boy volunteered to be on? (Hint: it wasn't the shirts team!)

We walked back home afterward & had lunch & quiet reading time and then it was time to rest. I was sooo sleepy. I'm not sure why. I got enough sleep last night, but hey, it's summertime & there was a chance to take a nap so I went for it. I'm so glad I did, too. It sure was nice!

The rest of the day, I was afraid to get started on any projects because I figured that just about the time I did, Larry would call to tell me that the van was ready & I would need to figure out who I could bum a ride from to go pick it up. I hate it when there are times like that because at the end of the day, I feel like I was just lazy all day & didn't accomplish anything.

We got to pick up the van last this evening. They got it fixed & it's fine now but it made for a very long day!

SUMMER DAY 18, Tues June 16

Samuel went to day 2 of his basketball day camp today at 8:00 this morning. I dropped him off & then ran back home to quickly finish getting ready for work before the girls & I left about 8:35. Tomorrow morning will be a little different, however. You'll see...keep reading.

In the past few days, I've had a little bit of a struggle with the key fitting into the ignition in my van. It's the same key as always but when I go to start the car, it's like the ignition is stopped up or something. I can't get the key in but about 1/2 way. I've had to pull it in & out over and over and wiggle it back & forth to get it all the way in. And then everything's fine. It kind of feels the same way as the door locks on some of the older cars we've had where the lock gets "sticky" and you have to squirt some graphite powder into the lock to loosen things up again. I had forgotten to tell Larry about it until this morning. After getting the key to go into the ignition (finally!), I called him while I drove to work. He promised that he'd look at it this afternoon when he got home.

However, my van had other plans. When I got into the van after work, I had to do the key gymnastics to get the key into the ignition again, but this time the key wouldn't turn at all. It was like I had put the wrong key into the ignition & was trying to use it to start the car. I twisted & turned the key but was getting scared that I'd break the key off if I twisted any harder on it! I called my dad (our favorite mechanic!) to see if he had any idea of what to do. He gave me a few suggestions but nothing worked. We decided that I'd just have to call a tow truck. Before calling them, I tried to call Larry but got his voice mail. I called the lady who was babysitting Samuel & she offered to come get us & take us home. Considering that it was about 100 degrees outside, I took her up on the offer!

After I got home, Larry called me back. He was in town today so he would be free about an hour later so he said not to do anything until he could go look at the van himself. He got done about 4:30 & went to my school to check it out. After some serious jiggling & banging on the key (& probably a little praying, too!), he was able to get it cranked. He drove it home, picked me up & we went back so we could bring his truck home. During his drive to pick me up, he went ahead & called the dealership to see if they could replace the ignition switch/key part thingy tomorrow. They agreed to do it at 12:00. When we got back to the school, I asked him to turn off the key & take it out and show me what he'd done to make it work. Mr. Magic's trick didn't work the 2nd time around. Apparently he just got lucky the first go-round. And so, we finally gave up & called the dealership back, reported what had happened & asked for a tow truck recommendation.

We came home & Larry went back an hour or so later when the tow truck could come get the van. Joy oh joy. The tow truck folks gave us a reduced price b/c they contract w/ the dealership and they discount anyone who tows a vehicle to them to fix. Hopefully they'll get it fixed tomorrow & I'll have my van back!

But until then...we'll be hoofing it to Samuel's basketball camp. Thankfully our neighbhorhood is RIGHT BESIDE the parking lot to the school where the camp is held. It's less than a mile to the school so I'll just walk him over in the morning & then go back and get him a few hours later.

Silver lining? Built in exercise tomorrow!

SUMMER DAY 16 & 17 -- Sun & Mon June 14 & 15

The past 2 days have flown by with very swift timing.

At about 2am on Sunday morning, Larry got a phone call from work. He had to leave & go take care of some clients in the middle of the night. We knew when he took this job that the chance was always there, but boy did it mess with my sleep. I couldn't doze back off after he left for nearly an hour. About 3am I got back to sleep & then the alarm went off to get ready for church. I ended up deciding to sleep a little longer & just get to church in time for service. I was working in the nursery, so I took Savannah in with me. With Larry having just arrived home as we were putting on our shoes to head out the door, I knew he wasn't going to be awake enough for Sunday AM church and Savannah isn't comfortable with sitting in church alone just yet, so she got to help me instead.

We came home & made a carrot cake (for small group last night) & then rested a bit before getting up & going again. I'm so glad we did get up & go. We began a marriage discussion study last night. While Larry & I tend to groan and roll our eyes when a new marriage study is suggested, the truth is that it never hurts to be reminded of the basics now & then. With our group being small, it's easy to become close to the people in the group & share very personal stories to help the others (or to ask for help!). Larry and I are remarkably compatible so we very rarely have big issues to conquer these days. (ha ha...we handled all that in the early days of our marriage!) That's not to say that our marriage is perfect, but if I had to rate our relationship on a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give us a 9. It's always fun for me to see these studies & recognize areas that we've dealt with in the past. It's encouraging to see how far we've come and it gives me another reason to praise God!

Just to share one little piece of our study. This is for the ladies! We were given this list at the end of our night's study. It is 25 Ways to Show Respect (to your husband), from the book Becoming the Woman of His Dreams. I hope you see something in the list that you didn't already know. We were challenged to pick out 1 or 2 things that we could work on in the coming weeks (until our next meeting) and then we'll report back on how it went. And so, here is the list:

1. Do not talk down to him.
2. Do not talk badly about him to others.
*3. Do not check behind him to make sure he did something to your standards.
4. Do not disregard his wishes.
5. Do not ignore his requests.
6. Do not laugh at his mistakes.
7. Do not make him the brunt of your jokes.
8. Do not compare him to other men.
9. Do not complain about your finances or his ability as a provider.
10. Do not speak sarcastically or with verbal jabs.
11. Do not roll your eyes when he makes a comment you don't agree with.
12. Do not continually "have a better idea".
13. Do talk to him in a pleasant tone.
14. Do speak highly or compliment him in front of others.
*15. Do allow him to do tasks his own way & then thank him when he is finished.
16. Do value his opinions.
17. Do try to fulfill his requests.
18. Do support his decisions.
19. Do thank him for providing for your family.
20. Do allow him to make final decisions.
21. Do support him in his decisions, regardless of the outcome.
22. Do avoid the words "I told you so".
23. Do take care of your appearance.
24. Do ask his opinion about your clothes or hairstyle.
25. Do tell him you are proud of him.

You'll see where the *s are.....those are the 2 I selected to work on. I think he & I both do pretty well at all the others, but I know I need to work on those! (and yes, I showed him this list when we got home last night & he knows that I'm going to work on those 2!!)

Today, Samuel attended his first day of basketball day camp at the high school. Yes, this is the 2nd week in a row that he's gone to a day camp of some kind. And yes, I have a very short & tiny child....but he loves basketball! It's only 3 hours in the morning for 4 days. He had so much fun today!!

When he got home, we had lunch & hung out at the house til some friends of mine called. We were expecting the call! You see, we met online through a mutual friend & have hit it off well. They live a couple hours from here and went on vacation this past week. In coming home from their trip, they passed through town & called to meet us at McDonald's. You may remember them from pictures that I posted last year about this time when they did the same thing. It was fun to spend some time with Mark & Terry Finley and their kids Carl & April. What a sweet family!

SUMMER DAY 14 & 15 (Fri June 12 & Sat June 13)

Friday June 12:
What a fabulous morning!! I woke up bright & early (about 7:00) to get Samuel & Larry out the door to work & Cub Scout day camp and then I crawled back into bed to read my book. I've been working on this book for a week or so. I was "this close" to the end, so I had to finish it!! I know I've mentioned it before, but I loveeeeeeee Karen Kingsbury!! Her books are SO good. As soon as I finished this one, I got on Barnes & Noble's website & found a used (cheap!) copy of the last book in this series. Gotta finish it!!

When I finally got up & moving, Savannah made this.

Really, I just supervised. It was her first time to attempt to make something like this completely on her own & she did great! She needed a little instruction here & there, but she did really well.

Unfortunately I didn't get a shot of it before a piece got cut....but you get the idea! Way to go, Savannah! :)

It's my goal to teach each of my kids how to do the laundry at age 10 & how to cook a meal (even a very simple one!) at age 13. Savannah is well-versed in using the microwave to heat up things, but she hasn't cooked a full meal just yet. I must say, however, that there have been a few times when I was sick as a dog & she took care of the house for most of the day so I could rest, including simple meals like frozen chicken nuggets (microwave!) and cereal. She is well on her way to being a good wife & mommy!

We had a quiet family evening at a friend's pool before I went to the grocery store. It was a nice way to relax & end our week.

Saturday June 13:
This morning, we went to my sister's house for my brand-new niece & nephew's adoption party! We had a lot of fun. They had a bounce house, pony rides, cake & pizza and lots of friends & family there to celebrate their "Gotcha Day". On Thursday, they went to court & made it all official & final so today we had a party!!

This is my mom holding my new niece, Kate. She is 16 months old.

And my nephew, Jake, who led me by the hand to the bounce house. We were in it by ourselves, just he & I, so of course I had to snap a picture or two. I realize this isn't the best picture...sorry! He's not a big fan of the camera. Jake is 2 1/2.

And their big cake! It said "Twice the blessings, twice the love". Sorry...the lens on my camera fogged up from all the humidity outside!!

We're so excited to have Jake & Kate as part of our family now!!!!! I love you sweet boy & girl! It's my honor to be your aunt!

And last but not least, this is me & my 2 sisters. That's me on the far left, Jennifer (Jake & Kate's mom) in the center, and Cindy on the right. Check out how DARK their hair is compared to mine.

SUMMER DAY 13, Thurs June 11

First off....correction: I messed up this weekend & numbered 2 days in a row as "day 9". So, now I've figured that out & today is truly day 13, not day 12!

Ok, now back to today---

Today was "swaps day" at Cub Scout day camp. The boys are invited to safety pin items to their hat & swap with other boys at camp. It's always humorous to see what kind of things come to camp pinned to those little boys' heads! This was Samuel on the way out the door...and yes, that's a small stuffed animal on the back of his head! He actually had a poster, too, but had not pinned it on yet when we took this pic!!

Family Camp was a blast again tonight. It was 50's night! The sanctuary was cleared out & the floor was set up with a bunch of little "records" for everyone to sit at with their family for a picnic-style dinner of Sonic burgers & tots with lemonade.

Our senior pastor led a skit with a whole bunch of other people that is a little hard to describe...it's more of a visual thing. I'm sure it'll end up on Youtube. When it does, I'll share the link. That's our pastor at the far left end. Our youth pastor is the 2nd one from the far right.

After the skit, one of our members who teaches dance at a local studio came up on stage & taught the whole crowd the Jitterbug. Interestingly enough, she is in a cast at the moment (from the knee down) so she had her husband and another couple and some kids on stage to help demonstrate. The whole crowd was given the chance to Jitterbug. My sweet girls had a blast dancing their little feet off!

While we all danced like a bunch of crazy folks (I don't think most of us ever really got the Jitterbug down), some ladies walked around & picked the best dancers from the crowd. Everyone cleared the "dance floor" & allowed the 2 best couples room to have a little dance off! I had to giggle as I watched that. How many churches teach a dance & then have a dance competition in the middle of the sanctuary? I wonder if this conflicts with my Baptist roots? ha ha!

After the dance competition, we all moved outside for icecream. Yum!

The most precious time of the night came at the very end. The children's church team put on a performance for us, showing us what the kids do every Sunday morning. My eyes welled up as I watched the crowd of children praising God with their hands lifted high. (That's my own little sweetie whose hand you see in the center of the pic!) Precious little hearts lifted to God....yep, that's all it takes to make this mama melt. Thank you, Jesus, for giving my sweet Sarah a heart for worship. She loves you sooo much & loves to praise you!

And last but not least, how do you like Larry's new truck? (not NEW, but new to us!) With his new job causing him to do a lot more driving, we were eager to find something with better gas mileage. On top of that, his old truck had 190K miles on it & was beginning to have some problems. It was paid off, so it was time to trade it in! Today was the day he brought this little beauty home.

We've decided that we're going to skip Family Camp tomorrow night. As much as we've enjoyed it, it's really hard for Samuel to stay awake & not become Oscar the Grouch before it's all over. After day camp all day & then Family Camp at night, he is one exhausted little boy! And besides, I need to go to the grocery store!

(continued) SUMMER DAY 11, Wed June 10

Our church has a super-fun "family camp" this week that we're attending. It's not actually CAMPING. No one sleeps in a tent or cooks something over a fire, so I'm not sure how it earned the title "camp" but whatever it is, it was so much fun!!!

Tonight was Medieval Night. People were invited to dress as princesses, knights, kings & queens, etc. The night began with a medieval-style meal. No utensils, just a big pile of food on the table & we were told to dig in!

While we ate, our senior pastor & worship pastor did a funny skit.

We had lots of yummy food before breaking up into groups (teams) to play some medieval themed games. First we went to Scarborough Faire where we painted the kids' faces & made leather bracelets. Larry was umm.... well, being Larry.

Next, we went to the Ye Olde Boats in a Moat station where we sailed little boats down a raingutter. The kids had to blow the boats (with a straw) to race & see who could be done first.

The next station was a firing range of sorts where the kids used a (Nerf --soft darts!) crossbow to shoot an apple off the head of 2 volunteers. I was surprised that Savannah volunteered!!

We moved onto another station where our team had to dress one of the members up as a knight using only foil. Larry volunteered to serve as our knight...and what a nice one he was. :)

We went to a jousting station where the kids were given noodles (those long thin swimming floats) to try to knock the other off the "log". Umm...I think our kids got out a little sibling aggression in this one. ha ha!! Larry & I tried to do it, too, but couldn't knock each other off the logs. I think if you weigh more than about 90 pounds, a foam swim noodle isn't gonna do a lot toward knocking you down!

There was a tug-of-war contest and a castle building station as well.

The night ended with a Bible story & songs time for everyone who came to Family Camp. It was a really cute program put on by our children's department, but geared toward the entire family.

One last picture, though. I can always count on my husband to be mature & well-mannered when it comes to taking a family picture. (snicker...the knucklehead!)

Tonight is 50s night! I can't wait to see how it goes!!
